Let’s not kid ourselves that 2020 will be the year that we shift the food baby belly. It’s not happening on this watch. So, without further ado, let’s get to the bit that us gluttons are really interested in… the FOOD deals that we can all afford. Here are three great offers from restaurants that are keen to whet our appetite for more… there’s even a Sunday roast amidst the offers.
After Work at Morimoto
Mondrian Hotel, Doha
The food. The fabulous design. The friendly service. It’s hard to find something we don’t like about Morimoto. And the After-Work offer is a great introduction to this fine-looking venue. The After-Work offer gives you the choice of three bites from a list of around 15 dishes. We’ve tried the seafood gyozas, the spicy salmon roll, spicy tuna roll (order it), wagyu short rib steamed bao (do it), the wagyu sliders (hell yes), Japanese A5 tsukune (meatballs with a slow cooked egg dip). Delicious. All of it really it. And, if you like a wine or 10, the drinks package which includes unlimited drinks such as cocktails, wines, spirits and beers is there to ease the worries of work away.
Price: 95 QAR for 3 bites (but more like a generous starter size)
200 QAR for drinks package
Details: Sunday – Thursday 6-8 PM.
Why you need to go: You won’t stop thinking about that Japanese A5 tsukune. Or the bao. Or the sliders.
Afternoon Tea at Jiwan
4th Floor of The National Museum of Qatar
I’ll start with this disclaimer: I work to help market this restaurant. So yes, I’ve sold the brand to myself. But when I came back from Malaysia and saw our latest price and offer – Afternoon tea for 40 QAR (no that isn’t a typo), I made Hani go the very same day.
This really is a steal as the quality of food (this is an Alain Ducasse restaurant), the venue which has dreamy desert-scape interiors designed by the Koichi Takada team, and the service make this feel a very special place. The offer includes three desserts, and two little extras (such as luqaimat) and a tea or coffee. The star of which is the laban ice cream. Check out the terrace – it has great views of Doha – and book one of the sand dune style seating, for tea on the terrace, Qatari style.
Price: 40 QAR per person
Details: 3:30 – 6:30 PM
Why you need to go: This is a sophisticated spot to impress guests and friends and it’s a bargain. Really.
Sunday Roast at Pearl Social
Marsa Malaz Kempinski
A Sunday roast dinner is a quintessentially British dish. A dish that is so much more than the sum of its parts. The Yorkshire pudding. The roast potatoes. The roasted root vegetables. A sweet red cabbage sauce. Perfectly cooked meat. And lashes of gravy. Put it together, and you have a dish that can bring back memories of Sunday gatherings with family and friends. If you’re not British, it’s just a great dish to discover how humble ingredients are elevated through simple slow cooking. And this is definitely a great introduction to British cuisine.
Pearl Social at Marsa Malaz Kempinksi offers a 1-course, 2 courses, and 3 course Sunday Roast option. The 3-course option includes a free glass of wine. I like free things. And, I like wine, so I went with that option. And, I wasn’t disappointed. My starter, the potted salmon with quinoa was a deliciously light and refreshing dish that was balanced with texture and flavour. The roast itself felt royal – the Yorkshire puddings (yes there were two) presented on a serving stand – and the vegetables which included parsnips and sprouts were delicious. And, dessert is a plate of 3 miniature classics. I enjoyed apple crumble, strawberry meringue, and a rich chocolate honeycomb. The roast in itself isn’t particularly cheap – 220 QR for 3 courses, but it is good value for the quality of the food and service. How it got into this offer post is that you can use The Entertainer and enjoy 2-for-1 which I believe makes it quite a steal – so it works out to be 110 QR per person for 3 courses and wine. And you can soak up the Mediterranean feels of the Qanat Quartier by taking a sunny spot on the terrace – not particularly British, but bloody lovely.
Price: 1 course 160 QAR, 2 Courses 190 QAR, 3 Courses 220 QAR plus a glass of red or white wine
Details: Sunday Roast is available Saturday 1 pm to 10:30 pm and Sunday 7 pm – 10.30 pm
Why you need to go: Enjoy the best of British in a Mediterranean setting. Just don’t talk about Brexit.
